Flower Power

Posted on April 5, 2009 by katrina

What is it about orchids that bring out the paparazzi? Forget the allure of the rose or plucking a daisy to figure out if he loves you or doesn’t. The allure of the orchid is strong (think Susan Orlean’s The Orchid Thief) and my impression is that orchids love being watched, like a model posing for a painter.

A “flower show” always sounded a little funny since the subject matter was as stationary as any object possibly could be. “Exhibit” would be a better word choice, since these flowers posed as still, as silent, and yet as self-aware as Degas’ dancers or Picasso’s nudes. The exhibit is being held at The New York Botanical Garden until next week, if you’re in the mood for sensual botany.
